A Message From The President

February 2025

Dear Members of the Athena Society,

I hope that you are all bundled up and staying warm in this cold weather. I hope that you have seen the images from the panhandle of our state—snow on Florida beaches! I also recognize that this unprecedented weather event has caused its share of disruptions, too, for our northern neighbors. January was the time of setting out our goals and intentions. Our annual goals have been carefully reviewed and updated, and we are making great progress. You can view the updates here. These updates will help us remain adaptable, proactive, and impactful in the months to come.

I’m also thrilled to share details about the diverse bonus events we’ve planned, each designed to enrich, inspire, and connect us. This month, join us for Laughter Yoga, a chance to rejuvenate your body and light up your spirit with laughter. I can’t wait for this one. On another evening, we’ll explore the beautiful Congregation Schaarai Zedek with Cantor Deborrah Cannizzaro, delving into the relationship between Judaism and other faiths. Finally, thanks to our amazing Athena Bonus Committee, we have secured tickets to the Stageworks production of When the Righteous Prevail at the Jaeb Theater—a powerful performance not to be missed!

Our February program, Ages and Stages: A Look Inside Our Sisterhood, will be a celebration of the experiences, wisdom, and stories that connect us as Athena women. Together, we’ll explore the beauty of our shared journey and the strength we draw from one another. This promises to be an inspiring and deeply meaningful gathering, so be sure to join us.

As we move through February, it’s important to take time to honor Black History Month, a vital opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the countless contributions, achievements, and resilience of Black Americans throughout history. Let us also remember the words of Maya Angelou: “I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going.” May these words inspire us to embrace the values of inclusion and diversity, both within Athena and in the broader communities we serve. There is much work still to be done.

In addition, February 14th marks the deadline for membership nominations. This is your opportunity to recognize and uplift the outstanding women in your circles who embody Athena’s mission. Let’s continue to expand our sisterhood with individuals who will contribute their talent and vision to our community.

On a national level, President Biden’s recent statement affirming the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has given us hope and momentum. However, it’s important to remember that this milestone is just one step in a larger journey. Ensuring the ERA’s full implementation will require our sustained advocacy and action. The Athena Society remains committed to this work, and together, we can make a meaningful impact.

As we navigate this year, I encourage each of you to stay engaged and involved. With our collective strength, the Athena Society will continue to make 2025 a year of connection, growth, and progress.

With gratitude and resolve,
Jessica
