A Message From The President

January 2019

If you’re like me, this is the time to search for normalcy! Holiday decorations are coming down. Gifts are put away (or returned) and we’re all looking forward to the year ahead. Athena, too, is a cyclical organization. Thankfully, we’re ready for the year ahead.

January 10th brings an opportunity to learn about a crucial topic. You won’t want to miss this meeting and conversation because it has dominated the news in Florida and our country. What could be more important in our everyday lives than addressing gun violence? On this topic we have been led by young people who care about their futures. Should we follow their lead? Impacting lawmakers to confront this challenge is also imperative. Kem Toole and her committee are anxious to present, share and discuss this subject with all of us.

Please remember our January bonus at Tampa International Airport. My visits to TIA usually involve catching a plane or retrieving a passenger. Now we will look behind the scenes and explore the artwork. We will learn about the mechanics of how an outstanding airport works. Thanks to Carolyn Reed, Mimi Stamps and the Bonus Committee for making this possible.

Other committees are targeting our top springtime philanthropic subjects, Young Women of Promise and Career Assistance Grants. By the way, Athena’s philanthropy was on full display in December when we delivered a fantastic array of children’s books to Champions for Children and the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum. Thanks to all who contributed.

Johanne Castagan continues to keep the wheels of Athena operating in an efficient manner. Watch for the new directories which will be distributed at the January Meeting. And our  Program Committee has already organized the February meeting. It’s another front burner issue – innovation and technology – led by women!

Our members have always achieved in so many ways, and we want to continue our momentum and impact. Our Membership Committee is looking for new individuals to enhance our diversity and outreach, and here’s where you can really help. Bring a guest to our upcoming meetings. Introduce potential members who could provide even more talent and experience to our organization.

It’s been a good year, but 2019 promises to be even better! Thanks to all for your guidance and commitment to Athena.
