A Message From The President

November 2014

At our October meeting the Program Committee, under the leadership of Betty Castor, kicked off the year with an engaging program on Title IX. The panel not only educated our membership on the progress that has been made for women in sports but also caused us to take pause as to the additional challenges that lie ahead and what we can do. The continued quest for how Athena can help further the support or progression of issues is part of who we are and what we are known for. This reputation is one we are proud of and will continue to embrace and promote. An example of an Athena member who represents this is our own Lee Leavengood. In October Lee was honored by two organizations for making a difference in people’s lives and enriching our community. USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy recognized Lee with their Lifetime Achievement Award and the Tampa Bay Lightning named her Lightning Community Hero. Lee, congratulations for inspiring us!

This month’s new member spotlight is on Nancy Hutson. With over 25 years of experience as an entertainment professional, Nancy serves as the only female vice president for Busch Gardens and Adventure Island. In this role Nancy manages the largest budget and team in the company’s 10 theme park system. She has been recognized by the International Association for Amusement Parks and Attractions and Theme Park Insider for outstanding show productions in many categories, most recently for IcePloration as Best Theme Park Productions. A University of Tampa graduate with a degree in education, Nancy is also an active community volunteer and leader. She currently serves as Vice President of the Temple Terrace Arts Council, is a member of the Foundation Board for the Tampa Theatre and is a Leadership Tampa Alumni. Welcome Nancy!
